Position Description – Music Director/Organist

Purpose Of The Position:
The Music Director/Organist gives leadership to the worship services of St. Timothy Lutheran Church by using the organ, piano, leading the choir(s), and handbells, and collaborating arrangements with the church instrumentalists to lift the congregation in music ministry for the praise of God.

Position Classification:
This is a part-time position as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Skills and Qualifications:
1. A minimum of a Bachelor of Music degree.
2. Sufficient keyboard ability to sight read hymns, liturgy, and anthem accompaniments.
3. Knowledge of Lutheran worship tradition and a theological understanding of the church sufficient to appropriately select music and texts for worship.

Direct Supervisor:
Works under the supervision of the Pastor and in collaboration with the Worship and Music Committee and other committees as indicated/requested.

Position Responsibilities:
1. Select and perform organ and piano music for all worship services, mid-week choir practices, and all special celebrations of worship where the organ and piano are used.
2. Accompany vocalists and instrumentalists as scheduled.
3. Select hymns appropriate, in conjunction with the presiding pastor, which are reflective of the liturgical season and designated Scripture texts.
4. Have first refusal to provide organ music for all weddings and funerals held at the church when the organ is the primary instrument used. Fees for these services are not provided by the church, but are honorariums from couples and families at an amount determined by church policy. The use of the organ by another organist is only with special permission.
5. Provide qualified substitutes for all absences.
6. Submit information for weekly/special service(s) worship bulletins in a timely manner as determined by the administration staff.
7. Choose and purchase organ, choral, and handbell music within the approved budgetary parameters.
8. Oversee the tuning and maintenance of all musical instruments of the church within the approved budget and provide regular reports specifying maintenance needs to the Worship and Music Committee.
9. Submit budget requests to the Worship and Music Committee each Fall as part of the budgetary process of the Congregational Council.
10. Submit monthly oral/written reports to the Worship and Music Committee.
11. Attend staff meetings and/or retreats.
12. Submit an Annual Report to the Worship and Music Committee.
13. Collaborate with the children’s music program, when necessary.
14. Prepare for and direct weekly rehearsals for the choir and handbell ensemble.
15. Collaborate with other leaders in the music ministry and delegate responsibilities where appropriate.
