Purpose of Position: 12-month, tenure-track appointment to direct the Writing Instruction Program in the Department of English at Northern Kentucky University. The department offers both upper and lower division writing courses at a university with approximately 15,000 students. Writing courses are taught by 22 full-time and 30 part-time faculty. Normal teaching load will be two courses per semester. The department has a graduate program (MA) that offers certificates in composition/rhetoric and professional writing. Credit towards tenure negotiable.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Provide leadership for the Writing Instruction Program.
  2. Develop policies and curricula for undergraduate general education composition classes in dialogue with departmental and university writing initiatives.
  3. Supervise writing instruction in the general education curriculum, including traditional and co-requisite writing courses and critical reading courses.
  4. Conduct training of graduate students, dual credit teachers, and part-time faculty and teach practicum in writing pedagogy.
  5. Recruit, hire, mentor, and evaluate part-time writing faculty.
  6. Represent the Writing Instruction Program in the university community and the broader regional community.
  7. Chair the department Writing Instruction Program Advisory Committee.
  8. Work with offices and campus partners related to student success, including first-year programs, office of international students and scholars, and writing center.

Qualifications:

  1. Record of teaching excellence in the field of composition/rhetoric.
  2. Experience/familiarity with the administration of writing programs.
  3. Record of ongoing scholarly achievement in the field of composition/rhetoric.
  4. Experience with technology in the field of composition/rhetoric.
  5. Ph.D. in composition/rhetoric with emphasis on digital writing, new media, writing program administration, or public writing.
  6. Experience/familiarity with writing assessment.
  7. Experience/familiarity with general education issues.
  8. Experience/familiarity with service learning.
  9. Experience/familiarity with writing across the curriculum.
