Job Purpose Statement: The job of Library/Media Specialist is done for the purposes of maintaining a library/media and textbook center at school sites; implementing age appropriate programs for students utilizing library resources; selecting appropriate items in support of classroom instruction, distributing, collecting and maintaining textbooks and educating students on the proper use of the library resources.

Essential Job Functions:

Assists teachers, students, and other personnel for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.

Collects textbooks and receipts and/or fines for lost or misplaced books.

Conducts classes in a variety of formats (e.g. story telling, puppet plays, orientations, etc.) for the purpose of promoting the use and enjoyment of the library/media center.

Coordinates media requests of individual's sites for the purpose of ensuring availability of audio visual equipment for instructional use.

Determines needs of the library/media center and orders appropriately for the purpose of coordinating with and facilitating classroom curriculum and programs.

Distributes library books, textbooks and media for the purpose of providing classroom and reference materials to students and staff.

Instructs students for the purpose of educating them on the proper use of the library resources including computers (i.e. classification system, card catalog, care of materials, internet, etc.)

Inventories textbooks, equipment and materials in library collection for the purpose of documenting losses and/or maintaining availability of materials and books.

Maintains various inventories and records (i.e. library materials, textbooks, etc) for the purpose of documenting and/or providing reliable information as it relates to library materials, textbooks, and media.

Processes orders (e.g. books, periodicals, films, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining libraryand textbook collection controls.

Promotes library use related to special holidays, seasonal activities, etc. for the purpose of motivating students to use the library resources.

Repairs books for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books.

Researches availability of materials and media for the purpose of selecting appropriate items.

Other Job Functions:

Participates in meetings for the purpose of communicating information and gaining feedback and/or direction on a variety of issues.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge to perform basic math functions, read technical information, create and/or compose documents and/or participate in panel discussions; and to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

Skills to perform multiple specialized technical tasks. Specific skills to apply pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; communicate with persons of varied cultural and educational backgrounds; operate equipment used in profession; operate standard office equipment including computers, perform standard bookkeeping/accounting procedures; perform standard clerical procedures; plan and manage projects; prepare and maintain accurate records; and utilize pertinent software applications including internet access. Keyboard/computer literate.

Abilities to deal with a level of complexity of tasks that require significant flexibility with data; processing of data; coordinating sequences of equipment operations; coordinating of other person's schedules and/or activities; discretion, independent action and/or judgment with regards to using data and/or working with people; uses sources of data; and interacting with persons and/or agendas that frequently change. Specific abilities to be attentive to detail; implement established curriculum; meet deadlines and schedules; and work under time constraints. Type 40 wpm. Lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Responsibility in relationship to people includes leading, guiding and/or coordinating. Supervises the use of funds with responsibility for the care of assets. The resources required (people, equipment, facilities, and/or funding) necessary to perform job functions are of a moderate scope and moderate opportunity exists for significant impact (positive or negative) on the organizations' mission.

Working Environment: The job functions are generally performed in an indoor environment requiring the following significant physical abilities: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling, sensory speaking, hearing and visual.

Educational Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent, one year Library Science course work is desired.

Experience Requirements: Two (2) years job related experience is a prerequisite.

Licensing, Certification, Testing Requirements: Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; Tuberculosis clearance. Will meet any and/or all Federal/State/District requirements.
