JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Scenic Artist

Approved by: Producing Artistic Director

Reports To: Producing Artistic Director, Production Manager, Technical Director

Job Summary: The Scenic Artist for Riverside Center for the Performing Arts will work with the Scenic Charge on a 6 mainstage show season as well as 4 children shows. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of scenic painting and texturing techniques. They will also be well organized and have experience managing their time among multiple shows. They are responsible for maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Communicate with the designer regarding scenic renderings.
  2. Communicate with the production manager over budgetary and over-hire needs.
  3. Create the aesthetic of the show per the designer’s specifications.
  4. Collaborate with the production team to schedule work hours around other departments throughout the load-in and tech process.
  5. Follow up on any paint notes that are given through the closing of the show.
  6. Advise in techniques to achieve specific looks.

Riverside Team Members:

  1. Practice proper time reporting (i.e., punches in and out accurately).
  2. Arrive at work on time, in the proper work attire, and ready to work.
  3. Demonstrate a helpful, positive attitude at all times to guests and employees.
  4. Understand and adhere to all safety, sanitation, and administrative procedures.
  5. Provide complete and timely communication to other employees throughout the shift.
  6. Be prepared to conduct weekly maintenance duties.
  7. Complete all assigned tasks and duties requested by managers.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of various paint techniques.
  • Budget tracking.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of various drop materials.
  • Proper storage of show drops.
  • Keeping an inventory.
  • Budgeting.

Education and Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre or Technical Theatre from an accredited university or possess equivalent professional experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in a professional theatre environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to bend at the waist and lift items up to 50 lbs. to waist level.
  • Ability to move items up to 50 lbs. for distances of 25+ feet.
  • Ability to remain standing and active for an 8-12 hour shift.
  • Indoor activity with prolonged exposure to windowless work area.
  • Frequent exposure to fluorescent lighting and low light conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to dust.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes.
  • Occasional work at heights in excess of 40 feet.

Pay Rate: Full Time $14-15 per hour.
