JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Scenic Charge Artist

Salary + Benefits:
$16.50-18.50 an hour (plus overtime after 40 hours)
Eligible for Insurance and PTO Benefits after 90 days
Single Room Housing with Shared Bathroom Provided

Department: Paints
Reports to: Production Manager, Technical Director

Dates of Employment: March 17 – October 5, 2025

SUMMARY: The Charge Artist is responsible for the safe, timely and effective execution of all painted scenic elements. This may include outside work for non-FRP productions. In conjunction with the other department heads, the Charge Scenic Artist manages a budget and coordinates their crew’s schedules. This position requires advanced skills in all types of scenic painting and sculpture as well as proven proficiency in leading a crew of artists.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work with Technical Director and ATD to create show schedules and timelines.
  2. Act as liaison between designers and paint staff to complete scenery paint needs.
  3. Create cost estimates for labor and materials on all shows prior to build.
  4. Communicate with designers on resources and budgets available.
  5. Oversee and delegate paint work to scenic artists.
  6. Research and create paint samples.
  7. Complete all scenic paint work on time and within available resources.
  8. Create and maintain a show paint bible.
  9. Maintain safe and clean workspace.
  10. Maintain all shop inventory and equipment.
  11. Commitment to the training and professional development of entry level theatre artists.
  12. Complete required parking shifts during show runs along with other staff as assigned by management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in theatre/related field or commensurate experience.
  • 3-5 years experience working in paints for theatre preferred.
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

    1. Supervisory skills.
    2. Experience in leading a team.
    3. Independently motivated.
    4. Problem solving and communication skills.
    5. Flexibility in schedule, ability to work shifted and overnight schedules.
    6. Ability to work within tight deadlines and balance priorities.
    7. Experience in creating and monitoring budgets.
    8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    9. Proficient Skill in Color Mixing.
    10. Experience with Physical Textural Treatments.
    11. Foam Carving.
    12. Painting of Soft Goods including Scrims and Translucencies.
    13. Be able to lift 50 lbs.
    14. Knowledge and experience in a wide variety of paint techniques including, but not limited to Faux Finish Techniques such as wood graining and marbling.
    15. Ability to take and apply feedback.
