JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Assistant Scenic Charge Artist
Salary + Benefits:
$15.50-17.50 per hour (plus overtime after 40 hours)
Eligible for Insurance and PTO Benefits after 90 days
Single Room Housing with Shared Bathroom Provided
Department: Paints
Reports to: Scenic Charge Artist
Dates of Employment: March 31 – October 5, 2025
SUMMARY: The Assistant Scenic Charge Artist will support the workload and tasks of the scenic art department under the supervision of the Scenic Charge Artist. The position will coordinate with the Charge Artist in the preparation, implementation, and maintenance of all scenic treatments for each production at Flat Rock Playhouse.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the completion and maintenance of all paint and scenic treatments as assigned by the Charge Artist to include color mixing, sampling, keeping the show book up to date.
- Supervise a scenic art crew as assigned by the Charge Artist.
- Shop maintenance, cleaning, and organization.
- In conjunction with the production staff instruct and ensure compliance with all known health and safety guidelines associated with the use of scenic materials and equipment.
- Employ the following tools and equipment: measuring and layout tools, application tools; brushes/rollers/pads, wood graining tools, p50/garden sprayer/HPLV spray guns and accessories.
- Commitment to the training and professional development of entry level theatre artists.
- Complete required parking shifts during show runs along with other staff as assigned by management.
- Potential opportunity to Charge 1-2 shows a season under the Scenic Charge Artist’s direct guidance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in theatre/related field or commensurate experience preferred.
- 1-3 years experience working in paints for the entertainment industry preferred.
- Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Proficient Skill in Color Mixing.
- Knowledge of Faux Finish Techniques including but not limited to wood graining and marbling.
- Experience with Physical Textural Treatments.
- Foam Carving.
- Painting of Soft Goods including Scrims and Translucencies.
- Experience in leading a team.
- Independently motivated.
- Problem solving and communication skills.
- Be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Flexibility in schedule, ability to work shifted and overnight schedules.
- Ability to take and apply feedback.
