General Description

SUNY Niagara has a need for a part-time Music Instructor for our Conducting course. This course is taught in person in a classroom setting on our Sanborn, NY campus. The objective of this course is to introduce the student to the basics of conducting proficiency, terminology, and score study. Conducting technique, posture, preparatory gestures, the ictus, eye contact, meters, releases, fermatas, styles, dynamics, hand autonomy, cues, entrances, baton technique, repertoire, and rehearsal procedure will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to conduct in class, rehearsal, and/or performance venues as well as to attend local performances.

Typical Work Activities

  • Teach course on campus.
  • Track attendance as needed.
  • Report on student learning outcomes at the end of the semester.
  • Report grades at the conclusion of the semester.

Essential Functions

Ability to work with and teach a diverse student population. Ability to speak in front of groups of people. Must be able to effectively communicate with students, co-workers, supervisors, and the campus community. Must be able to develop, prepare, and present information. Must be able to operate computers. Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position and adjust any teaching to the Americans with Disabilities Act provisions.

Required Qualifications

  • Three years of experience teaching at a high school or college level.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Music or related field.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office software (i.e., Excel and Word).
  • Experience with the Brightspace learning management system.
