General Description
SUNY Niagara has a need for a part-time Music Instructor for our Piano Musicianship course. This course is taught in person in a classroom setting on our Sanborn, NY campus. Class instruction for beginning keyboard music majors is designed to teach the concepts and fundamentals needed to perform at the piano. Content is focused on improving keyboard skills through sight-reading, scales, arpeggiations, harmonizations, accompanying, and improvising. Proper piano technique and posture will be addressed, as well as appropriate literature for successful placement into a baccalaureate music program.
Group piano lessons will include individual and ensemble performances, with assignments combined with lecture and practical applications of music theory as it relates to the piano keyboard. Students will be expected to sing and play upon instructor request and at all performances.
Typical Work Activities
- Teach course on campus.
- Track attendance as needed.
- Report on student learning outcomes at the end of the semester.
- Report grades at the conclusion of the semester.
Essential Functions
Ability to work with and teach a diverse student population. Ability to speak in front of groups of people. Must be able to effectively communicate with students, co-workers, supervisors, and the campus community. Must be able to develop, prepare, and present information. Must be able to operate computers and physically perform the duties of the position while adjusting any teaching to the Americans with Disabilities Act provisions.
Required Qualifications
- Three (3) years of experience teaching piano at the high school or college level.
Desirable Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Music or related field.
- Experience using Microsoft Office software (i.e., Excel and Word).
- Experience with the Brightspace learning management system.
