Job Summary
This position is responsible for assisting and providing information services to library patrons at the reference desk.

Major Job Duties

  • Provides reference services to patrons by assisting them with finding requested information.
  • Instructs patrons in the use of computer-based information systems and other reference sources, including the internet; assists patrons with using computers and printers.
  • Assists patrons at the reference desk in person and by telephone and email; assists in locating information; provides readers' advisory services; instructs patrons in the use of computers and other electronic devices.
  • Providers readers' advisory services to patrons; contributes to displays and book lists.
  • Participates in collection development activities in areas as appropriate.
  • Performs circulation duties as needed; checks items in and out; collects fines; issues library membership cards.
  • Performs related duties.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Work is typically performed indoors, in a library setting, while sitting or standing at a desk or table and/or intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The incumbent occasionally lifts light and heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency typically associated with the completion of a degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • One to two years of work relevant work experience. OR
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Knowledge of Library Science
  • Knowledge of the library's public service commitment.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal classification system.
  • Advanced knowledge of reference resources and services, including computer-based systems.
  • Knowledge of authors, genres, and the library collection.
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the library computer system.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of the community served by the library.
  • Skill in the use of office and audiovisual equipment, including a scanner, copier, facsimile machine, and computer presentation projector.
  • Skill in delivering effective, friendly, and respectful customer service to library patrons.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Part-time positions that are less than 20 hours per week, as well as seasonal, temporary, on-call, or substitute jobs are not eligible for fringe benefits.
