GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs intermediate technical work providing technical support, manages digital resources, and assists in maintaining the library’s IT infrastructure. In addition to operating the circulation desk, providing assistance to library patrons; and various related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Library Director. Supervision may be exercised over library pages and library assistants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
- Responsible for resolving technical issues for both staff and patrons, ensuring access to digital content, and assisting with the deployment and maintenance of library systems, hardware, and software.
- Managing and operating the circulation management system, reference or technical services section of the library; providing assistance as needed in various sections of the library.
- Operating circulation desk; checking books, magazines, videos and other materials in and out of library; responding to questions from patrons; assisting library patrons.
- Resolves technical issues for both staff and patrons, ensuring access to digital content, and assisting with the deployment and maintenance of library network systems, hardware, and software.
- Assist in the management and troubleshooting of integrated library systems (ILS), online databases, and digital content platforms.
- Maintain and update the library’s website and assist with digital media services.
- Support patrons and staff with technology-related inquiries, including digital literacy training.
- Collaborate on the development and implementation of new digital services and programs.
- Ensure proper functioning of printers, scanners, computers, and other library equipment.
- Monitor and maintain the security and functionality of the library’s network infrastructure.
- Assist with inventory, installation, and configuration of new technology.
- Keep accurate records of system performance, issues, and repairs.
- Process holds and book returns for WCML Remote Book Locker.
- Operates circulation desk; answers questions; helps patrons find information and materials.
- Registers patrons for library cards; checks materials in and out.
- Helps patrons use copier and other library equipment.
- Registers patrons to use computers and enforces policy; monitors public use of computers; answers questions on word processing, Internet access, e-mail, card catalogue and other programs.
- Provides reference services and advice to patrons.
- Places materials on reserve.
- Prepares and maintains overdue files.
- Sets up community room for meetings/programs.
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of basic library procedures, methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of the library circulation functions; thorough knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; skill in the use of library equipment, materials and resources; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and associates. This position requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in Library and Information Technology or related field and some experience in library work. Knowledge of IT systems, including hardware, software, networking, and cybersecurity best practices. Familiarity with digital content management systems and library technologies. Experience in a library or similar setting is preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina required. Strong customer service and communication skills. Ability to troubleshoot technical issues in a timely manner.
