Job Overview: We are seeking a skilled and creative Structural Designer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have expertise designing custom packaging solutions for both retail and industrial applications in a variety of substrates: primarily corrugated, folding carton and fabricated foam. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, including sales, procurement, and manufacturing to create functional cost-effective solutions that enhance the customer experience and drive sales.

Key Responsibilities
- Design & Development:
- Develop and design packaging solutions involving multiple substrates, utilizing solid model inputs or physical product.
- Collaborate with suppliers- provide direction and outsource designs outside area of expertise if necessary and procure prototypes not produced in house.
- Create structural designs that are aesthetically appealing, functional, and capable of withstanding handling and transportation.
- Utilize CAD software (e.g, ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks) to create detailed specifications, assembly drawings and prototypes for client approval.
- Document approved designs in accordance with company standards and on customer specified templates as required.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with the sales team and clients to ensure designs meet objectives.
- Coordinate with production and manufacturing partners to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet cost, machine and material constraints.
- Communicate design concepts and technical specifications to clients, using 3D tools such as ArtiosCAD 3D and Solidworks, and/or hand sketches as appropriate.
- Prototyping & Testing:
- Create prototypes of designs and conduct testing to evaluate strength and durability.
- Revise designs based on client feedback or testing results to optimize functionality and efficiency.
- Material Selection & Cost Optimization:
- Research and recommend appropriate materials for each solution, balancing performance and cost.
- Optimize designs for material efficiency and cost-effectiveness without sacrificing quality or functionality.
- Project Management:
- Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, ensuring all deadlines are met and client expectations are exceeded.
- Prepare and present design proposals.
- Quality Control:
- Ensure all designs meet industry standards, compliance regulations, and safety guidelines.
- Work with manufacturing and quality control teams to ensure the final product matches design specifications.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Minimum: Two year (A.A.) or equivalent technical degree OR min 5yrs experience working as a structural packaging designer for a packaging distributor or manufacturer.
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in relevant field of study (ie. Structural Packaging Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering).
- Experience:
- Minimum 5 yrs experience in structural design (5+yrs preferred).
- Hands on experience designing with CAD software, such as ArtiosCAD, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work well in a collaborative, fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Additional Skills (Preferred):
- ArtiosCAD Enterprise & Webcenter experience.
- 3D rendering/visualization software (Esko Studio, Strata 3D, Keyshot etc).
- Experience operating/troubleshooting CNC equipment (ie. Kongsberg cutting tables).
- Knowledge of sustainability practices in packaging.
- Adobe Creative Suite.
- Understanding of packaging dynamics, ie. cushion curves, and ISTA/ASTM test procedures.
