Position SummaryThe Designer III leads the design group and must demonstrate the skill sets and aptitude necessary to effectively guide people. She/he applies creative design skill, knowledge of manufacturing techniques, and Computer Aided Design Drafting practices to the review of layout, assembly, and detail drawings for mechanical, structural, piping, electrical, and electronic equipment of simple to moderate complexity for a variety of OII-MSD projects. The Designer III will review sketches and other graphic information for use within technical documents (e.g. Operations and Maintenance Manuals) and proposals. Designer III have responsibility for the design department personnel and assure all design work is produced to established department standards. Originality and imagination are key to this position, as there is typically restrictions to space, size and/or weight that are applicable requiring invention of systems/components that do not currently exist.Duties & ResponsibilitiesDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESWill work with supervisor in developing a budget and schedule for work assigned to the group.Will be responsible in assigning the work as well as ensuring the budget is maintained and scheduled dates are met for this work.Performs independent reviews or original design and interacts with engineering and manufacturing personnel to ensure performance and efficiency of manufacture, assembly, and integration.Can check technical accuracy and completeness of all drafting.Tasking will include review of drawings, layout and detailed design of mechanical systems using various drafting techniques (AutoCAD or SolidWorks).Will interface with clients.Will supervise work of one or more designers on multiple projects.Will mentor all design personnel within the group when needed.OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Support the development of bids and proposals.Support engineering activity with solid modeling to prepare models for export to engineering analysis/simulation software including merging and meshing of parts and application of load vectors under the direction of the Design Supervisor.QualificationsEDUCATIONAssociate Degree in related engineering field, or equivalent work experience.Formal Training in use of solid modeling software (i.e. SolidWorks).EXPERIENCE
At least ten years experience working with Military Standards and other Government specifications.Proficiency using software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks required.Computer skills using Microsoft Office products required. Technical writing skills are helpful.Working knowledge of U.S. Navy specifications and requirements related to Structural, Mechanical, Piping and Electrical drawings.Ability to obtain a clearance.KNOWLEDGE
Strong computer skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite and PeopleSoft experience is a plus.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Background knowledge in government and commercial contract requirements.Demonstrated knowledge of the ASME Y14 drafting standards.
