The Department of Writing, within the Community and Technical College at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), invites applications for a full-time, Term Assistant Professor to teach writing courses in a vibrant interdisciplinary academic community that serves students from a wide array of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We respond to the lifelong learning needs of students by providing writing instruction for dual enrollment, military personnel, immigrants, and returning students, with special attention to non-traditional, at-risk, and English language learners. Our writing courses serve the general education mission of our campus by developing critical capacities like reading, writing, and critical thinking, while maintaining a commitment to social and linguistic justice. Writing courses offered range from developmental to discipline-specific, including sections designated for dual enrolled students and academic Honors.
We seek a Term Instructor of Communication starting August 2025. The bipartite position consists of 0.8 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) for instruction and 0.2 FTE for service.
The Department offers a thriving BA in Communication that commenced in Fall 2022, a minor in Communication, and four courses fulfilling the University Communication General Education Requirement (GER). The ideal candidate will have college-level experience successfully teaching competitive debate and argumentation. The Department seeks a candidate committed to a collegial climate, motivated to teach in person, and skilled in online pedagogy.
The candidate will be qualified to teach COMM A320 Argumentation and Debate; and COMM A360 Competitive Debating; our GER courses: Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Small Group Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Public Speaking; have a demonstrated commitment to student success, excellence, and possess strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
To thrive in this role the candidate must have a strong background in communication and college-level competitive debate.
Minimum Qualifications:
Masters in Communication or related field, PhD preferred.
Success in teaching college communication courses, specifically argumentation and debate, as well as competitive debating.
Record of college service or demonstrated potential for service.
Position Details:
This position is on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. This is a full-time, 9-month, term funded, non-tenure track, faculty position with a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. Faculty salaries are based on a variety of factors, including education and experience.
