Director, Technical Author (Finance)
Description
The Director, Technical Author leads the development, implementation, and management of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and supporting documents across the organization. This role ensures documentation excellence by establishing best practices, maintaining regulatory compliance, and fostering cross-functional collaboration. The director oversees a team of Technical Authors and subject matter experts to drive consistency, quality, and innovation in procedural documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides effective leadership to achieve high levels of service and product quality, and other criteria in accordance with policies, goals, and objectives.
- Hires, supervises, trains, develops, and evaluates performance of assigned personnel. Identifies and effectively resolves personnel issues.
- Develops and executes the organizational strategy for SOP and document creation, standardization, and governance.
- Leads and manages a team of Technical Authors, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance management.
- Establishes, enforces, and maintains SOP policies, procedures, and templates to ensure uniformity and compliance.
- Oversees the creation, review, and approval of SOPs across all business units, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, customer/end-user specifications, and regulations.
- Manages the SOP suggestion, idea, and recommendation process that ensures a thorough review, engagement with stakeholders, and prioritization of changes that lead to improved processes.
- Fosters a team of Technical Authors to drive collaboration across diverse teams to ensure a strong commitment that influences innovative ideas and quality outcomes.
- Partners with key stakeholders and SMEs, including quality, process improvement experts, and training teams to ensure procedural clarity and accuracy that meets functional needs and supports organizational objectives.
- Works collaboratively with Process Improvement teams to identify opportunities to streamline and optimize SOPs to ensure greater efficiency and end-user satisfaction.
- Monitors industry regulations and implements updates to ensure SOPs remain compliant with applicable laws and standards.
- Partners with training teams to drive the integration of SOPs into employee training programs to promote compliance, operational efficiency, and process output sustainability.
- Implements tools and systems to enhance SOP management (tracking, dashboards, etc.).
- Leads periodic reviews of SOPs to ensure accuracy, relevance, and alignment with operational needs and practices.
- Remains abreast of changes, technology, tools, and other developments in the industry to ensure an innovative and strategic approach for procedure development, enhanced end-user satisfaction, and meeting business objectives.
- Serves as a support and/or point of contact for SOP-related inquiries during internal and external audits.
- Organizes and maintains a centralized repository for SOPs, ensuring proper version control and accessibility.
Requirements
Knowledge & Education
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Journalism, or related field required.
- Advanced degree in Technical Communication, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements such as federal, AABB, and CLIA standards governing blood industry manufacturing activities required.
Licenses & Certifications
- Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC), technical writing certification, professional certificate in editing, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- RN or MLS preferred.
Experience
- 8+ years of proven experience in SOP writing or technical documentation required.
- 3+ years at an enterprise leadership level preferred.

- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage large-scale documentation projects.
- Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with documentation and version control systems.
- Excellent planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and maintain keen attention to detail.
- Excellent facilitation and presentation skills.
- Strong understanding of corporate operations and compliance requirements.
- Proficiency with documentation tools such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, and Visio.
- Familiarity with Lean and process improvement principles.
- Strong customer service skills.
