Lead Geographic Information System (GIS) Scientist
to help lead our geospatial team in our
Portland, ME
office. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in defining and implementing our geospatial strategy, harnessing the power of intelligence to drive decision-making and enhance our offerings to our clients and stakeholders. This role may suit someone currently in a Geospatial Sciences role looking to move to a more mentorship/leadership-based career. Initiative and innovation are central to success in this position, so you must exhibit a genuine passion for GIS and remain abreast of industry trends. You will be expected to proactively introduce new ideas and efficiencies to the Senior Leadership Team, advocating for their implementation to enhance the service line's value proposition. You will play a pivotal role in providing consultancy and advisory services in GIS to clients, leveraging your expertise to offer strategic insights and solutions that address their unique geospatial challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, your ability to effectively communicate the benefits of these innovations to both internal stakeholders and external clients will be critical in driving adoption and delivering impactful solutions. Your Impact Provide technical leadership and assistance for GIS-related inquiries and initiatives, offering guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise. Supervise the design, development, and implementation of GIS solutions to meet organizational requirements. Cultivate a culture of innovation and continual improvement within the geospatial team. Stay updated on emerging geospatial technologies and trends, assessing their potential impact on operations. Proactively strategize and anticipate risks and issues. Collaborate with project teams to integrate geospatial data and analysis into various projects and processes. Communicate with project team members to define data needs, project requirements, and desired outputs. Manage projects related to GIS database design and management, qualitative/quantitative analysis, mapping, and data visualization. Maintain high standards of data integrity and quality throughout GIS projects by implementing robust procedures and protocols. Assist in coordinating the GIS workload for Portland Maine GIS group and work with local leadership to balance workload and staffing needs. Serve as a mentor to junior GIS staff and allocate and review project tasks. Provide guidance related to successful delivery across the full project lifecycle to team members. Engage other Subject Matter Experts and technical support staff as needed. Participate in client meetings, when required. Customize GIS workflow and software programs for data collection, engineering, and environmental applications. Who You Are Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Geology, GIS, Geography, or related certification. Five (5)+ years of experience in environmental consulting. Ten (10)+ years of professional experience using Esri GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Survey123, ArcGIS Enterprise/Portal). General awareness of AutoCAD, Python, Visual Basic, Arcade, or SQL programming. Presentation-quality cartographic skills (portfolio examples are welcome). Strong general computer skills (troubleshooting/problem-solving). Proficiency in Windows OS and Microsoft Office Suite. Creative problem-solving, multi-tasking, and organizational skills. Strong production management capabilities and a proven understanding of project management methodologies. Strong attention to detail and demonstrates ownership and accountability for work. Capability to work in a dynamic environment, including a demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities. Ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of individuals from various backgrounds, including engineers, scientists, planners, GIS professionals, federal, tribal, and state government officials, and the public. Excellent oral and written communication with the ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical staff/management. Solid work ethic and the drive to be a leader in the office and in the professional community. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with relational databases such as SQL-Server or EQuIS. CAD/BIM/Digital Engineering Application Experience. Customization of GIS software using Python. Proficiency with ArcGIS Arcade. Ability to travel occasionally, as needed (less than 5% travel anticipated).
