Department Information

The IU Center for Rural Engagement improves the lives of Hoosiers through collaborative initiatives that discover and deploy scalable and flexible solutions to common challenges facing rural communities. Working in full-spectrum community innovation through research, community-engaged teaching and student service, the center builds vision, harnesses assets and cultivates sustainable leadership structures within the communities with which it engages to ensure long-term success. Job Summary

IU CRE seeks a collaborative, motivated individual with a passion for rural community engagement to support Rural Placemaking Studio this Fall 2024 in the continuation and completion of assigned design projects. Interns will work closely with faculty and staff from the IU SOAAD and the IU CRE, as well as key community partners. Interns will focus on completing a set number of comprehensive design renderings or schematics for rural placemaking projects as assigned.

Department-Specific ResponsibilitiesRegularly attends check-in meetings with faculty and staff to check in about project details and give progress updates throughout the summerAttends community site visits and planning sessions to learn about community projects and needs for each partner communityRefers to a scope of work to prepare the desired design concepts, renderings, maps, and other project templates for community partner useAssists in collecting and preparing data and background information for a variety of comprehensive design contexts, including projects in signage and wayfinding, landscape, streetscape, and pre-architectural/interior designObserves and reports usage of public spaces within partner communities and suggest how to best engage with assetsAids in the preparing of presentation materials, producing digital models, and production of concept design documentsDevelops a deeper understanding of rural community development and engagement

Qualifications

EDUCATION

RequiredCurrently enrolled as a student at Indiana University pursuing a degree in Architecture, Interior Design, and/or Graphic DesignLICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

RequiredPossess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana UniversitySKILLS

RequiredStrong organizational and analytical skillsStrong writing and communication skillsAbility and enthusiasm to work on a team.Positive attitude with a willingness to learn.Highly thorough and dependable.Ability to problem solve.PreferredFamiliarity of programs like Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD, MS Office, SketchUp and Adobe Suite

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to move up to 20 pounds The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

Majority of work will be carried out remotely. Occasional travel to partner communities throughout the state will be required. Fellow will have access to a vehicle through IU Fleet Services or can arrange transportation with the Quality of Place Liaison.

Advertised Salary

Starting at $15.00 per hour

Work Hours

10-15 hours per week depending on project volume

This position is for Fall, 2024.
