JOB OVERVIEWJob Description Summary:The Office of Communications and Marketing ( OCM ) develops and implements strategy and tactics for showcasing and raising the visibility of the university’s experts, initiatives, and accomplishments. It manages media inquiries and interviews with senior university leadership, provides internal communications expertise, and produces print and online publications to showcase the university.

OCM is currently seeking a Senior Communications Associate, Provost Office Institutes, to manage communications for three dynamic and high-impact academic institutes at the George Washington University: The Alliance for a Sustainable Future, the Global Food Institute, and the Institute for Racial, Ethnic, and Socioeconomic Equity (Equity Institute).

Two openings are available for this role. These individuals will report to another full-time staff member to support this work. Each individual will become the point person for one of the institutes while contributing to the team in supporting all institutes more broadly.

Responsibilities for the Senior Communications Associate, Provost Office Institutes include:

With direction from the communications manager of Provost Office Institutes, working closely with institute leadership and collaborating with communications and marketing partners to develop comprehensive communications and marketing plans and collateral tailored to the needs and objectives of each institute.

Researching, writing, editing, and distributing communications (e.g., website content, articles, newsletters, emails, correspondence, one-pagers, social media) to internal and external audiences in support of strategic objectives and furthering the institutes’ mission.

Collaborating with cross-functional teams (including editorial, social media, multimedia, web, media relations, research communications, internal communications, marketing) that bring together expertise across the Office of Communications and Marketing to support the needs of the institutes.

Supporting planning, logistics and promotion for convenings and events.

Monitoring news and current events related to institutes’ subject matter.

Additional responsibilities may include tracking and responding to inquiries from constituencies, preparing reports, collaborating with student communications interns, and coordinating with communications and marketing colleagues on the development and implementation of strategies, tactics, and initiatives.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:Preferred Qualifications:Commitment to the work of the institutes and/or prior communications experience in areas in which the institutes are focused (sustainability and climate change, food, and equity).

Experience in communications planning and execution at a university, nonprofit, or other mission-driven organization.

Excellent writing and editing skills.

Ability to multitask, remain organized, think critically, prioritize tasks and work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment.

Experience interacting with members of leadership and ability to make communications recommendations, persuade, and find solutions to problems.
