Performance Responsibilities:

The Music Education Teacher at the elementary school level is responsible for planning and implementing music education activities, monitoring students, and evaluating student outcomes. Music Education in the elementary school generally emphasizes introductory music appreciation, early instrument use, and concert performance activities. The Music Education Teacher records and maintains student information. He or she is responsible for communicating with all parties involved in the education of the student. The Music Education Teacher serves on special committees on a volunteer basis, and participates in all required in-service training programs.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Prepare/set-up music room prior to the first day of school.
  2. Set up equipment prior to class.
  3. Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  4. Prepare and implement lesson plans, providing for appropriate learning experiences for each student.
  5. Establish and enforce rules of conduct; supervise students in the music room and cafeteria, or outside on the blacktop or athletic fields.
  6. Participate in school-wide behavioral programs, document student behavior and make necessary referrals.
  7. Demonstrate skills being taught; assist students in performing skills.
  8. Teach safety rules related to each activity.
  9. Research, and order music education equipment.
  10. Plan, organize, and coordinate Fine Arts Night activities, collaborating with the Art Educator.
  11. Monitor and evaluate student skill levels and outcomes.
  12. Maintain student records following established procedures and practices.
  13. Prepare interim progress reports and quarterly report cards.
  14. Prepare information sheets for participation in parent-teacher conferences.
  15. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  16. May plan and supervise field trips following established procedures.
  17. Meet and coordinate with specialists; adapt activities to students’ special needs; develop appropriate modifications for I.E.P and 504 plans.
  18. Update website information related to the music education program.
  19. Serve on special committees, and fulfill responsibilities of a committee member.
  20. Attend planning meetings, team meetings, staff meetings, data meetings, and other meetings of groups according to membership in those groups.
  21. Monitor use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  22. Attend in-service training and county workshops.
  23. Prepare lesson plans and materials for substitute teachers; include class lists, and any special instructions related to students’ special needs.
  24. Create emergency lesson plans as required.
  25. Maintain regular, on-time, attendance.
  26. Accommodate visitors to the classroom.
  27. Knowledge of emergency plans for the school, such as lockdown procedures.
  28. Participate in fire drills, as required.
  29. May be asked to become involved in community initiatives, or other music-related community activities.
