This is a public service position with responsibility to maintain the operation of the circulation desk and reference desk and the maintenance of the Library collection. This position achieves a positive impact with patrons as the library's primary contact with the public; promotes library programs and services and works to assure efficient and friendly service to library patrons. This position may assist in maintaining the web pages for the Library and other departments of the City.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attends the circulation desk and performs all circulation desk duties; promotes library materials usage, programs and services; directs patrons to proper stations of information or service; orders circulation supplies as needed.
- Attends the reference desk and provides reference and research services for patrons as necessary, refers patrons as necessary.
- Responsible for the library's lost and damaged collections and procedures; handles necessary correspondence.
- Receives incoming telephone calls.
- Inputs library materials and patron information to online database as required.
- Works with the Library Manager and Library Assistant to coordinate interlibrary loan policies and procedures.
- Processes library materials, and performs routine mending of library materials.
- Coordinates library services to homebound patrons.
- Assists patrons whenever necessary, in materials retrieval and usage and refers patrons as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Comprehensive knowledge of public library operations and services and library automation. A working knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs; and knowledge of library circulation or processing techniques; working knowledge of library classification systems; working knowledge of basic office procedures.
- Must be familiar with modern computer operating systems and able to assist I.T. in maintaining computers and software. Must be able to troubleshoot both hardware and software issues as they arise.
- Ability to make constructive suggestions for the improvement of services. Ability to accurately maintain library filing systems; ability to orally communicate effectively; ability to meet people easily, to express oneself clearly and to exercise good judgment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school or GED, supplemented by two years of post-secondary education or training in library science, liberal arts, education or a related field, OR
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid Driver License with an acceptable driving record.
