Job Title: Bilingual Communications Specialist
Location: Diocese of Texas, Houston Office
Reports to: Director of Communications
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Team: Communications
Job Summary:
The Bilingual Communications Specialist supports the Communications Department in bringing awareness to the Episcopal Diocese of Texas through its varied communication platforms. The position is integral to communicating diocesan news to our Spanish speaking congregations and requires establishing relationships with staff in other ministries to capture information of primary interest to our Spanish speaking audience, in addition to content that is shared with the diocesan whole. This position helps to ensure a comprehensive communications strategy while implementing new and innovative ways to connect with congregations and the community-at-large. The position requires overall support of the department and the diocesan vision through numerous contributions in both languages while ensuring a commitment to our Spanish speaking congregations. It requires telling the stories within our diocese.
Essential Functions:
- Ensure cohesive communications strategy for our Spanish speaking audience.
- Manage the production of weekly and biweekly e-publications, and contribute to the annual magazine, including development and curation of content in both English and Spanish for the bi-weekly diocesan e-publications, and other deliverables as necessary.
- Advance communications and news dissemination/offer support to our Hispanic congregations and events such as the Hispanic Lay Conference.
- Develop and help guide content for social media platforms in both English and Spanish, working closely with the social media curator.
- Work with staff graphic designer, social media curator, and videographer/webmaster to enhance and ensure quality deliverables.
- Assist the director with strategic initiatives to advance diocesan communication.
- Ensure pertinent and engaging content on the diocesan website.
- Translate English documents, projects, and other communication assets to Spanish.
- Assist with development of marketing and communications assets for the diocese in both languages.
- Seek opportunities to increase Spanish communication engagement by being attuned to activities related to discernment, formation, and lay ministry- and promote such news to our Spanish speaking audience, while also bringing visibility to other news within our Hispanic congregations.
- Contribute significantly to the editorial calendar.
- Guide social media content development and curation for all audiences.
Other responsibilities include:
Spanish audience database creation and management
- Work with appropriate diocesan staff to establish an accurate database to target our audience and work with other staff to help keep it current.
Congregational Support and Training
- Provide communications support to congregations by increasing visibility of their work and accomplishments and helping to promote initiatives or other items of interest.
- Conduct trainings to help support congregations in their drives to be self-sufficient in communications around their ministry and evangelism.
Promotion:
- Promote Episcopal churches by pitching stories to English and Spanish media outlets, when necessary.
- Establish working relationships with media outlets.
Communications Support Functions:
- Update and manage media database and track media coverage as it pertains to the diocese and our bishops.
- Cross train to assist team when required (ex: website content management system(s) and social media platforms).
- Assist communications in diocesan conference duties.
- Become familiar with Canva or other graphic tools.
- Ensure photo permission for proper assignment of credit.
- Relational network development
- Coach, consult, and train in area of expertise when required.
- Support other communications team members as necessary.
- Provide research as necessary.
Coach and Consult:
- Work with social media curator to help train congregations in effective use of digital news options; encourage interaction with diocesan offerings and provide feedback on effectiveness.
- Work with communications team and provide website template resources to congregations and support their efforts.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Fluency in both English and Spanish (written and spoken).
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
- Strict attention to detail from various perspectives including but not limited to grammatical soundness, appropriateness of content, timeliness of articles, etc.
- 2-5 years of successful experience in communications or a related role.
- Ability to present in areas of expertise.
- Proven experience in social media management, content creation, and media relations.
- Excellent writing, editing, and translation skills.
- Proficiency in social media management platforms (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer).
- Proficiency in Microsoft office suite.
- Basic Proficiency in photo and video editing software and/or willingness to learn.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Some knowledge of the Episcopal Church and its mission is helpful.
