St. Mark Lutheran Church Director of Worship and MusicWe want each of our services to glorify God and lead the congregation into deeper worship through musical excellence, creativity, and passion flowing from the Holy Spirit.Recognizing that music serves an important purpose in worship for St. Mark, but also to the community, the Director of Worship and Music is a key leader in the Church. The Director of Worship and Music at St. Mark is responsible for implementing the goals of the ministry of Music for the Church. This role will be responsible for playing the organ at the traditional worship services.Spiritual and Personal Qualifications
General:
Must be a Christian by confession. Must be open to a variety of musical expressions. Must be willing to work with a variety of people.Experience:
Previous church music experience with organ and piano/keyboard. Should be familiar with the Lutheran liturgy and church calendar.Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance or Education preferred or equivalent experience.Areas of Responsibility
Worship
Cooperate with the Pastor and the Worship and Music Ministry Team in the areas of general planning and leadership of the music program.Develop and manage the budget for Worship and Music with oversight from the Worship and Music Ministry Chair.Choose hymns aligning with liturgical season and biblical text.Manage the schedule for the St. Mark contemporary worship bands and participate when needed.In cooperation with Pastor and in communication with Worship and Music Ministry Team, plan and implement all worship services during the year including Wednesday Lenten Worship, Holy Week, Confirmation Service, Wednesday Advent Worship, Wednesday Evening Thanksgiving Worship, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and other worship services or scheduled events as needed.Track and report the use of copyrighted music for visual church presentations in service and livestream for all services held at St. Mark.Serve as “Music Librarian” for the church - purchase, file, catalog, and supervise the lending out of all church music.Communicate with the Pastor, AV Coordinator, Church Administrator and Office Assistant regarding order of worship, special music, organist schedule, and any other music and worship topics for the bulletin.Communicate with guest pastors and special speakers regarding order of service and special music.Serve as an ad hoc member of the Worship and Music Ministry Team attending monthly meetings.Music
Lead worship playing liturgy, hymns, prelude, and postlude primarily on the pipe organ, or piano when appropriate, at the Saturday evening and Sunday morning traditional services.Direct liturgical and contemporary worship celebrations.Develop and direct musical groups to include adult choir, children’s choir, and handbell choir holding weekly rehearsals as well as coordinate rehearsal schedules for all adult and children’s vocal, bell choirs, and instrumental ensembles.Recruit, train, and schedule cantors communicating changes in liturgical settings and omissions.Coordinate maintenance of church instruments such as: pipe organ, piano tuning, bell maintenance.Recruit, train, and mentor instrumentalists/vocalists for the music programs empowering people in the congregation and wider community to share their musical gifts.Provide or approve music or musical consultation for church weddings and funerals (additional compensation is received from the event served based on congregational guidelines).Build and maintain a list of qualified substitutes that may be used for scheduling for all absences.Provide leadership and/or coordinate a comprehensive music program for children of all ages.Coordinate Sanctuary rehearsal schedule with the Church Administrator.Organizational Accountability
The Director of Worship and Music shall report to the Pastor with input from the Worship and Music Ministry Team.The Director of Worship and Music and Pastor shall be responsible for developing the goals for the music ministry of St. Mark.It shall be the responsibility of the Director of Worship and Music to implement the goals.The Director of Worship and Music shall provide a report to the Pastor as well as the Worship and Music Ministry Team regarding the progress of the accomplishment of the goals monthly.Additional Information
The St. Mark pipe organ was built by the Moeller Pipe Organ Company of Haggerstown, MA and was installed by the Fabry Corporation.
