POSITION SUMMARY:
The Executive Director of Communications is strategic, bold, and creative. In this position, there is a heavy emphasis on external and internal communications, engagement, training and support, and brand management. This role is responsible for serving as a thought partner to the Superintendent, managing a team and all communications activities, and building external relationships with the organization's constituencies and members of the media. This position requires knowledge of education, organizational change, systems-level and executive mindsets, and the demonstrated ability to assume responsibility and work effectively and gracefully under pressure while maintaining confidentiality.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Executive Leadership and Team Management
Serve as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet team and work cross-functionally to advance the district and board’s Vision, Mission and Goals, all established and approved by the School Board, and the district’s supporting Strategic Plan.
Bring a communications lens to support and inform district plans, the district mission, and the district response to federal, state, and School Board mandates and guidelines.
Build capacity and train administrators, School Board, district staff and interested affiliate organizations in transparent and clear communications, engagement strategies, and necessary requirements for state and federal law and regulations (e.g. First Amendment).
Lead and manage the district’s communication team to ensure print, digital structures and web services are meeting district and school communication needs.
Monitor, review, and analyze end-user and constituent browsing habits to ensure that site development maximizes the discoverability and usability of critical information and to ensure continuous learning.
Participate or lead work groups or committees for cross-functional work, and other duties, as assigned.
Communications, Media and Brand Strategy
Guide the strategy for all print and digital communications, website, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate the district’s vision, mission and goals to ensure that the district is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information within our community’s diverse network and constituent base.
Coordinate district crisis communications by directing the design and distribution of emergency communications and regularly coordinate and train with local emergency responders.
Serve as the district media spokesperson and foster a relationship with members of the media.
Maintain and update district branding, style guide, supporting templates and coordinate “one voice” of the district’s brand and style.
Manage the district’s website and digital strategy to anticipate, coordinate, and respond to communications needs and ensure ADA and linguistic accessibility, while maintaining compliance with the law (archiving requirements, etc.).
Oversee organizational awareness and training with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act as it pertains to district publications, website and social media, and other compliance regulations.
External Engagement and Relationships
Represent the district in the community and serve as an ambassador to community-based organizations at meetings or external events.
Balance and respond to requests that come from multiple constituencies against the communication needs of the district’s diverse audiences—students, staff, parents/caregivers, and community members—to determine and provide advice on the most effective ways to deliver timely, relevant information.
Oversee ongoing community, parent, and student surveys, including those required by federal and state law.
Collaborate with industry peers regarding best practices and trends in effective communication and engagement.
Lead and coordinate the District’s role and communication in levy and bond elections and ensure compliance with Public Disclosure Commission regulations.
Ensure compliance with privacy rights in all media relations, and ensure administration, board and staff understanding of the same.
Monitor and advise on regulations regarding communication and digital interactions, including topics such as advertising, access to resources, social media, and distribution of flyers.
Policy and Board of Directors Partnership
Annually update reports, records both digital and physical, and comply with the School Board’s Results (district goals, formerly known as “Ends”) and operational expectations (formerly known as “Executive Limitations.”
Attend all board meetings to prepare recaps of the meeting and serve as board liaison to the media, as needed.
Officially publicize board meetings according to the Open Public Meeting Act and ensure compliance in all programs required by governmental standards.
Update district regulations and procedures, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of three (3) years of team management and minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in media, journalism, communications and/or marketing. Additional skills in project management, software applications, photography, video production, graphics, UX design and editorial quality control are highly preferred. Further, the individual will possess the:

Ability to anticipate what needs to be done in areas of responsibility and independence coupled with appropriate consultation with others in following through with areas of responsibility.
Ability to manage large scopes of work and supervise others to ensure a timely and high-quality work product.
Ability to maintain respectful, productive relationships with others, both professionally and personally.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:
CPR/First Aid Certificate (may be required). Valid WA State driver’s license and appropriate insurance required.

That which is authorized by your supervisor and required to be effective in the position and to maintain certification.
