Join our team at SPEAK MPLS, a member-powered media center and home to Minneapolis public access TV channels 16, 17, and 75 on Comcast. We’re reimagining the future of media through community connections and creative opportunities. As a Multimedia Journalist, you will produce, shoot, and edit AMPLIFY MPLS while leading engagement initiatives that fill local news coverage gaps and keep Minneapolis residents informed and connected.
AMPLIFY MPLS is a SPEAK MPLS original weekly TV show and community engagement series featuring community stories, local news, livestreamed conversations, and event coverage, packaged for TV and digital distribution. The show elevates underrepresented voices, highlights local stories, and provides accessible civic engagement opportunities. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reporting and Video Production
- Community-Centered Storytelling – Report on local news stories, feature pieces, and community spotlights featuring people, organizations and critical issues impacting Minneapolis residents.
- Political Roundups – Produce stories from Minneapolis City Hall and the Minnesota State Capitol about key news and policy developments affecting residents, and ELECT MPLS series covering local elections.
- Community Conversations – Execute quarterly SPEAK MPLS Live! and pre-recorded roundtables and civic engagement discussions, filmed both in-studio and in the field.
- Independent Media Collaborations – Co-produce stories with news and media organizations, transforming print and digital stories into engaging video content for broader distribution.
- Package and distribute AMPLIFY MPLS and other SPEAK MPLS content across TV, digital, and social media platforms, ensuring broad reach.
- Lead member and community engagement efforts related to media, including conducting member surveys, compiling quarterly reports, and publishing a monthly email newsletter.
- Manage media archives and ensure proper file organization for AMPLIFY MPLS and other SPEAK MPLS productions.
- Coordinate technical logistics for productions, livestreams and event recordings, ensuring proper setup and functionality of equipment during studio and field shoots.
- Provide basic media literacy and production training as needed, supporting members and community storytellers through workshops, one-on-one guidance, and SPEAK MPLS programming.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 3-5 years of experience as a journalist with hands-on multimedia production skills, including reporting, writing, shooting, and editing news stories.
- Experience with public access TV, community media, or mission-driven journalism preferred.
- Strong storytelling and creative development skills, with a portfolio showcasing compelling multimedia journalism projects that demonstrate journalistic integrity and visual impact.
- Deep understanding of Minneapolis communities, local issues, and civic affairs—must have a strong connection to the city and an awareness of the issues that matter to residents.
- Proven track record of managing production schedules and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in industry-standard equipment, software (Adobe Creative Suite), and best practices for file management and distribution.
- Exceptional organizational, leadership, and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to oversee multiple projects at once.
- Strong interpersonal skills for both independent work and collaboration with the SPEAK MPLS team, members, partners, and the public.
HOURS + COMPENSATION
This is a full-time position at $24/hr. This role is fully in-person, and the ideal candidate will have the flexibility to work Monday-Friday mornings and afternoons, and some evenings and weekends as needed. Full-time employees receive a $200 monthly health care stipend, generous PTO, and a SPEAK MPLS membership, which includes access to all studios, equipment, co-working spaces, and media center resources. This is a two-year grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal.
