Job Title: Chapter Proposal Writer/Editor

Scope: The Chapter Proposal Writer/Editor works as an integral part of the Sierra Club’s donor communications efforts, focusing primarily on fundraising for chapter and group projects from foundations. Helps the Sierra Club meet its annual fundraising goals by working with chapter directors and other chapter and group staff and volunteers, Operations, Finance, and Advancement gift officers—and in coordination with Sierra Club Foundation (the Sierra Club’s fiscal sponsor)—to write, edit, and get approval for chapter proposals and reports. Coordinates all aspects of the proposal and report development, submission, and administration processes.
The Chapter Proposal Writer/Editor is responsible for writing and editing proposals to support Sierra Club chapter projects, in accordance with the requirements of the donor and those of the Sierra Club and Sierra Club Foundation. The Chapter Proposal Writer/Editor also prepares reports on grant-funded activities and helps coordinate related grants administration such as scheduling, filing, and systems tracking.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
- Preparing grant proposals in cooperation with Chapter staff, Grants Management & Conservation Finance staff, members of the Chapter fundraising team, and other staff to ensure they are well-written, engaging, persuasive, accurate, and in line with overall Sierra Club priorities.
- Preparing grant reports for foundations, corporations, and major donors on grant-funded activity.
- Advising Chapter staff on developing effective content for new and revised projects and reports.
- Keeping up to date on current foundation, corporate, and major donor grant-making priorities and tailoring proposals and reports accordingly.
- Coordinating the submission of proposals and reports to foundations by working with regional gift officers.
- Helping prepare and update training materials and conducting training for chapter staff and volunteers on proposal writing.
- Assisting with maintenance of various grants administrative processes including the Salesforce Grants Management System, maintaining schedules of deadlines, filing documents, and tracking grant and gift award letters.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following skills, experience, and competencies:
- Ability to efficiently write and edit content according to specific guidelines and in collaboration with others.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Experience working as a team member to develop and complete projects under tight deadlines.
- Excellent word processing skills and ability to learn in-house and enterprise software systems.
- Excellent organizational skills and experience managing multiple projects.
- Committed to continuously deepening and evolving understanding of systems of oppression.
- Uplifting and additive approach to challenges and mistakes.
The strongest candidates will also demonstrate:
- Proven experience writing/editing grant proposals or fundraising documents.
- Knowledge of conservation issues.

Compensation And Benefits: The salary for this position is $62,000, annually. This position may require occasional overtime to meet deadlines.
