POSITION TITLE: Packaging Intern
REPORTS TO: Services Manager/Operations Manager

SUMMARY
This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the design, production, sales, and quality control aspects of corrugated box manufacturing. The Packaging Intern will work closely with the General Manager, Sales Manager, Quality Manager, and Design Manager, learning about industry practices and contributing to various departments within the Wapakoneta Corrugated Box Plant. This position is ideal for college students pursuing a career in drafting, design, engineering, or a related field.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and Engineering:
Learn box specification: Gain experience in defining the specifications for different box designs.
CAD Operation: Operate the CAD table and assist in drafting designs for corrugated packaging.
Routing and Machinery: Learn basic routing techniques and machine operations involved in the design process.
Board Grades: Understand the different grades of corrugated board and their specific uses in packaging.
Graphics and Visual Design: Get an introduction to box graphics and the basics of design for visual appeal.
Box Styles: Learn about the various box styles and their applications in the packaging industry.
Production and Operations: Machine Operation: Run and feed machines, assisting with various production tasks.
Assembly: Work in the assembly area, understanding the different stages of packaging production.
Material Flow and Scheduling: Learn the flow of materials through the plant and work with the scheduler to understand production timelines and scheduling processes.
Quality Checks: Familiarize yourself with quality standards, inspections, and required checks for products.
Cross-Departmental Exposure: Gain insight into the roles and responsibilities of different positions within the plant.
Sales and Customer Interaction: Lead Generation: Assist in developing a list of sales leads for each sales representative.
Sales Ride-Alongs: Join sales team members on visits to top customers to understand their needs and gather feedback.
Customer Relations: Learn how the sales team engages with customers and the process of managing accounts.
Market Feedback: Collect feedback from customers regarding their experience with the plant's performance and expectations.
Quality Assurance: Quality Audits: Assist in conducting quality audits and sorting materials as part of ongoing quality control processes.
Process Improvement: Learn the process audits and statistical methods used to maintain high-quality standards in production.
ISO Guidelines: Gain exposure to ISO guidelines and best practices in manufacturing.
MFG Gap and Print Registration: Study and assist in managing manufacturing gaps and ensuring correct print registration on packaging.
QUALIFICATIONS Education: Currently enrolled in college with a focus on drafting, design, engineering, or a related field.
Skills: Strong communication skills to work effectively with customers, sales teams, and management.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business documents, reports, and technical instructions.
Proficiency in basic mathematical concepts, including geometry and statistical analysis, is a plus.
Familiarity with CAD software or willingness to learn.
Personal Attributes: Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical thinking.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
Interest in learning about the manufacturing process and packaging industry.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The intern will be required to perform tasks in a dynamic plant environment. Specific physical demands may include: Regular sitting, standing, and walking.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Vision requirements such as close, distance, and color vision for design and inspection tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The intern will work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, interacting with team members across various departments. The plant environment is dynamic, and tasks will vary day-to-day, providing exposure to all aspects of the production process.
DURATION
This is a summer internship position, with exact start and end dates to be determined.
