Overview
The Communications Specialist is responsible for creating innovative content for web, newsletters and social media that promotes ASM's programs and initiatives related to global health, climate change, sustainability and other microbiology topics. This role manages ASM newsletters and develops impactful digital media campaigns to enhance program visibility. Collaborating with ASM's IDEAA (Inclusive Diversity with Equity, Access and Accountability) team, the Communications Specialist creates engaging content highlighting underrepresented voices and the diversity of the field. This position supports the goals of the Communications department and the mission of ASM.

Essential Functions (defines the critical end results expected of the jobholder related to the accountabilities above)
1. Create cutting-edge content related to microbial sciences, IDEAA and various other ASM initiatives and goals crafted for publication on asm.org, social media, newsletters and ASM's digital member magazine Microcosm.
2. Oversee production of ASM's newsletters. Work with Marketing and Communications team members and Email Specialists to curate content and ensure delivery of a high-quality product.
3. Serve as Communications liaison for IDEAA (Inclusive Diversity with Equity, Access and Accountability) team; create DEI content for website, newsletters and social media. Interface with ASM's IDEAA (Inclusive Diversity with Equity, Access and Accountability) committee and DEI staff members to help guide creation and sharing of DEI campaigns, messaging and initiatives.
4. Create and execute communications campaigns for social media, utilizing digital media tools such as Canva to integrate compelling visuals.
5. Help plan and execute Public Outreach events, such as "Agar Art on Display," an art gallery that takes place during ASM's annual meeting, and other science communication trainings, workshops and events.
6. Stay abreast of trending topics, notable days and events (awards, holidays, awareness days, etc.) in the microbial sciences and help create content to support these topics and days.

Physical DemandsThis is largely a sedentary role and may sit or use PC for long periods of time. Bending, reaching, or stooping may be necessary for use of filing cabinets or other office cabinets or office machines. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Salary Range- $70,327.10 - $91,393.31
